Beyond Tolerance in Jerusalem and London

The paper analyzes the effects of globalization trends on women's and men’s interpretations of sense of comfort, belonging and commitment in Jerusalem and London. The purpose of this analysis is to clarify the meanings of ‘beyond tolerance’ in urban planning and city management. The paper shows that the gendered meanings of these notions replicate, in many cases, power relations and control in different scales of environment. The paper begins with a brief theoretical background focusing on the meanings of ‘local knowledge’ as a gendered knowledge and its possible incorp/oration in urban planning and city management. Following is the analysis of women's and men’s narratives on comfort, belonging, and commitment in Jerusalem and London. The paper ends with conclusions and some insights related to the interconnections existing between these elements and city planning and management.
