Teaching the "Other"

Linking Knowledge, Emotion, and Action in Geographical Education.

This article explores approaches to teaching that are intended to help students go "beyond tolerance" of people different from themselves on such bases as gender, ethnicity, nationality, physical abilities, or religious beliefs in order to strive for informed understanding, respect, and empathy. It offers examples from the practices of university teachers of geography and women's studies that engage students in critical perspectives of their own cultural values, bring them to reflect on field encounters and media representations, and carry out activities that link experience with knowing and feeling.
